Electric vs Gas Golf Carts: Which Should You Buy?

We sell electric carts, so treat the recommendation accordingly — but the honest answer to electric vs gas isn't "electric always." There are specific situations where a gas cart is the better tool, and pretending otherwise would waste your time.

Where electric wins

Running cost. A full charge costs roughly a dollar depending on your electricity rate — see what it costs to charge a golf cart. No fuel runs, no jerry cans.

Maintenance. No oil changes, spark plugs, air filters, belts or carburettor. Over a decade this is a substantial difference in both money and hassle. The main electric-specific cost is eventual battery replacement, which lithium has pushed a long way out.

Noise. This one changes how a cart feels to use. An electric cart is quiet enough to hold a conversation at speed, and it matters in gated communities — several have noise ordinances that effectively rule out gas.

Instant torque. Electric motors deliver full torque from zero, so pulling away and climbing short rises feels stronger than the specs suggest.

Where gas genuinely wins

Long days without stopping. A gas cart refuels in minutes and goes again. An electric cart needs hours on a charger. For a working property where the cart runs dawn to dusk, that's decisive.

Sustained hill climbing. Electric handles hills well, but doing it repeatedly all day drains the pack hard and range falls sharply. Gas is more consistent under prolonged load.

Heavy, continuous hauling. Towing and carrying serious weight over long periods favours gas.

No charging infrastructure. Remote land with no reliable power is a genuine case for gas.

Total distance. 100+ miles on a tank is simply more than any current cart battery delivers.

If you're hunting on acreage, running a farm, or working a large remote site, gas is a reasonable choice and we'd rather say so.

Range, honestly

Electric range depends heavily on battery chemistry. Lead-acid carts typically manage 25–40 miles; lithium carts commonly reach further, with terrain, load, speed and temperature all moving the number.

For neighborhood, golf and resort use, this is a non-issue: most owners plug in overnight and never approach the limit. It only becomes a constraint if you're doing genuine mileage between charges.

An electric cart's routine maintenance is essentially tires, brakes and — on flooded lead-acid — checking water levels. A gas cart needs a small-engine service schedule kept up, and neglecting it shows faster than most owners expect.

Cost over time

Over ownership, electric usually costs less to run, with one caveat: the battery pack. A lead-acid pack needs replacing every few years, and that expense is what closes the running-cost gap. Community rules can decide this for you

Before weighing anything else, check what your community permits. A meaningful number of HOAs, gated communities and resorts either restrict gas carts outright or limit when they can run, on noise and emissions grounds.

It's worth a five-minute check of your HOA rules, because it can settle the question entirely. Golf courses increasingly take the same line — plenty of private clubs now run electric-only fleets and restrict what members may bring.

Resale and depreciation

Both hold value reasonably, but the pattern differs in a way worth knowing before you buy.

An electric cart's resale is dominated by battery condition. A cart with a healthy lithium pack sells quickly and holds value well, because the buyer isn't inheriting an imminent bill. The same cart on tired lead-acid sells for materially less — buyers price in the replacement, usually harshly.

A gas cart's value tracks engine hours and condition much like any small engine. There's no equivalent cliff, but no equivalent premium either.

Which should you buy?

Choose electric if: you're in a neighborhood, gated community or resort; you'll drive on public roads as an LSV; you value quiet; you can charge where you park; your daily distance is comfortably inside the range.

Choose gas if: you run all day without a charging break; you work long sustained hills; you tow or haul heavily; you have no reliable power where the cart lives; you need 100+ miles between fills.

For the large majority of buyers — families, neighborhood drivers, golfers, resorts — electric is the better vehicle now, and that's a change from a decade ago rather than a given.
