How Long Do Golf Cart Batteries Last?
Lifespan by battery type, the five signs yours are failing, and the charging habits that quietly cost you years. Written by a dealer, not a battery brand.

Golf cart batteries last three to five years for lead-acid and ten years or more for lithium, but those figures hide a lot. The same lead-acid pack can give you three years or seven depending almost entirely on how it's charged and stored — and it's the owner, not the battery, that usually decides which.
Here's what determines lifespan, how to tell when yours is going, and what actually extends it.

Two numbers matter here, and people usually only look at the first. Calendar life is how long the battery survives in years. Cycle life is how many charge-discharge cycles it delivers. Whichever runs out first ends the pack.
That distinction explains a common confusion. A cart driven daily exhausts cycle life first — the pack dies from use. A cart driven twice a month at a holiday property exhausts calendar life first, and will not reach its rated cycles no matter how carefully it's treated. Personal use vs fleet use
Ownership pattern changes the answer more than most guides admit.
A household cart — a few trips a week, charged overnight in a garage, one careful owner — routinely reaches the upper end of its range and sometimes beyond. Six to ten years from a well-kept lead-acid pack is not unusual.
A fleet cart at a course or resort is a different life entirely: multiple drivers, deep discharges daily, charging squeezed into whatever window exists, and no one whose job it is to check water levels. Fleet packs commonly fail years earlier than the same battery in private hands.
This matters if you're buying used. A cart from a private owner with a documented charging routine is a genuinely better bet than an ex-fleet cart of the same age and price — see used inventory for what we currently have.
Five signs your batteries are failing
1. Range has dropped noticeably. The clearest indicator. Same route, same load, less distance. It happens gradually, so compare against what the cart did when you got it rather than against last week.
2. It sags under load. Slowing on a hill it used to climb, or losing pace with passengers aboard, points at a pack that can no longer hold voltage under demand.
3. Charging takes longer, or won't complete. A charger cycling repeatedly without finishing usually means at least one cell is no longer accepting charge properly.
4. Visible damage. Swollen cases, leaking electrolyte or heavy terminal corrosion. Swelling in particular means replacement, not repair.
5. Water consumption has jumped. On flooded lead-acid, needing noticeably more distilled water than it used to indicates cells working harder than they should.
If you see two or more of these, get the pack load-tested before buying anything. On lead-acid a single weak battery drags the entire string down — and replacing one battery is a fraction of replacing six. A test tells you which situation you're in.
What actually shortens battery life
Deep discharging. The big one. Lead-acid should not routinely be run below about 50% state of charge. Occasional deep discharges are survivable; making a habit of it can halve the pack's life.
Leaving it partially discharged. Lead-acid sulfates when stored below full charge, and sulfation is largely irreversible. Plug in after use, not when the cart next feels slow.
Undercharging. Interrupting a charge cycle repeatedly prevents the pack from fully balancing, and the shortfall accumulates.
Heat. High temperatures accelerate degradation in every chemistry. A cart stored in a sealed metal shed in summer ages faster than one in a shaded garage.
Neglected water levels. Flooded cells exposed by low electrolyte are damaged permanently. Check monthly in season, and top up with distilled water only — never tap water.
Corroded terminals. Resistance at the connection makes the whole pack work harder and charge less effectively.
Long storage without maintenance. A cart left over winter on a discharged pack often doesn't come back.
How to make them last longer
- Charge after every use, even short trips, on lead-acid.
- Let the charge cycle finish. Don't unplug at 80% because you need the cart.
- Check water monthly on flooded cells, after charging rather than before, and only to the fill line.
- Keep terminals clean — a wire brush and a protective spray once or twice a year.
- Store somewhere temperate, out of direct sun.
- For winter storage, charge fully first, then top up periodically rather than leaving it connected for months.
- Keep tires inflated. Less rolling resistance means shallower discharges, which means longer pack life — the same habit that protects your range.
None of these are difficult. Collectively they're the difference between three years and six.
When to replace, and what it costs
Replace when a load test shows the pack down substantially on capacity, when multiple batteries test weak, or when any battery is swollen or leaking.
Two things worth knowing:
Replace lead-acid as a full set. Mixing a new battery into an ageing string means the new one is dragged down to the level of the old ones. The exception is a genuinely early failure in an otherwise young pack.
Never mix chemistries. Lead-acid and lithium have different voltage curves and charging requirements. Mixing them damages both.

Battery age and buying used
If you're looking at a used cart, ask the battery's age before anything else. It affects both the cart's usable range and your imminent costs more than paintwork or upholstery does.
A cart three or four years into a lead-acid pack may need several thousand dollars of batteries within a year — which frequently erases the saving against a newer cart. Ask for the purchase date, look for a date code on the batteries themselves, and if the seller doesn't know, assume the worst and price accordingly.
Conversely, a used cart with a recently fitted lithium pack can be excellent value, because the largest wear item is effectively new.
Common questions
How often should I replace golf cart batteries? Lead-acid every three to five years, AGM four to six, lithium ten or more. Charging habits move those numbers substantially in both directions.
Can I replace just one golf cart battery? Only if the rest of the string is young and healthy. In an ageing pack the new battery is pulled down to match the old ones, so a full set is usually the better spend.
How do I know if a battery is bad? A load test is definitive. Warning signs are reduced range, sagging under load, longer charge times, swelling and increased water use.
Does leaving a golf cart plugged in ruin the batteries? Modern chargers taper off, so short periods are fine. Leaving a lead-acid cart connected for months can overwater and degrade the cells — top up periodically instead.
Do lithium batteries need replacing too? Eventually, but typically after a decade or more rather than a few years. They lose capacity gradually rather than failing suddenly.
Does cold weather damage golf cart batteries? Cold temporarily reduces capacity in any chemistry. The lasting damage comes from storing a discharged lead-acid pack in cold conditions, where it can freeze.
